Donna Lemmon's Story
Life
After high school, I attended Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, where I majored in French education and minored in Art. During my sophomore year, I spent the spring semester in Grenoble, France, and traveled to Spain, Italy, Switzerland and England.
I met my husband Terry while I was attending BYU. We married during Christmas vacation of our senior year (1969). After one semester of grad school at UMass, he joined the Air Force to avoid being drafted (Feb 1971). With the Air Force we lived in Texas, California (Sacramento), North Carolina, Okinawa, Korea, Ohio, Massachusetts again and Florida. From Florida in 1988 I took a month-long trip to Europe with my parents and brother, visiting Romania (birthplace of my mother's parents), Italy, Germany, France, England and Wales. I went back to school and work at the same time (with 6 kids at home!) and got my master's degree in management. We became foster parents and eventually adopted a foster daughter.
My husband retired from the Air Force in Florida, got a civilian job and we moved to Newhall, California in 1993. We now have 7 children (6 married) and 10 adorable grandchildren. Our youngest son will be graduating from BYU this summer and probably coming back to live with us for a while, so we will no longer be empty nesters.
While I have worked on and off since high school, most of the time I stayed home with my children. As they got older I enjoyed being a perpetual student, taking classes in interior design, Spanish and Italian. I also like working on my house and garden, reading, and traveling with my husband.
While we lived in Okinawa, ...Expand for more
we visited Taiwan, Hong Kong and Thailand. In Korea we toured the country by car. We have taken several trips back to New England, especially in the fall, joining the hordes of leaf-peepers. Since we have lived in California, we have spent a week in Cancun and taken two Caribbean cruises. My Spanish has come in handy. We also drive to Utah several times a year to ski and visit family members.
My current goal is to sell our house in California and move to an old Victorian in Maine which needs a ton of work to restore it. I'd also like to work in the field of interior design, but I have too much going on right now to be tied down to working!
College
After high school, I attended Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. I majored in French education and minored in art. About twenty years later I went back to school at the Florida region of Troy State University and got a master's degree in management. Since then I have taken classes at Los Angeles Mission College, receiving a certificate in interior design. I have also taken several Spanish classes at Mission and College of the Canyons, as well as some Italian.
Workplace
I have most frequently worked as a secretary, although I have also been a substitute teacher in junior high and high schools, an English teacher in Korea, and a draftsperson for an interior designer. Most of the time, however, I have stayed at home being a mother. After taking several interior design classes at the local community colleges, I have used this training to help friends and family redecorate their houses. My kids love it when I buy the supplies and then do the work myself!
